Flutist Mingzhu Wang is an experienced
orchestral player, chamber musician and soloist in the United
States, China, Canada, Japan, Germany, and Austria. Born in
Chengdu, China, Miss Wang grew up in a musical family. At age 10
she switched from piano to flute and began her studies with
China’s first generation flutist, Professor Hongjun Zhang. In
2001, Miss Wang enrolled in the Shanghai Conservatory of Music,
winning first place in the entrance
examination. In July of 2005 she received a Bachelor of Art
degree, winning the conservatory's most prestigious scholarship
every academic year. While a student at the conservatory,
Miss Wang, in 2004, won first place in the First National Flute
Competition for Collegiate Artists, held by the Ministry of
Culture of China and considered the most influential national
flute competition in the People’s Republic of China since the
country was founded in 1949. In 2005
Miss Wang moved to the U.S. and entered the Yale School of Music
on a full scholarship, studying with renowned flutist
Ransom Wilson. She received a Master of Music in flute
performance from Yale in May 2007.
Miss Wang has extensive experience as an orchestral
musician. Notable performances include principal flute in the
final festival concert at the Colorado College Summer Music
Festival (CCSMF) on July 1st, 2008, and on October 15th,
2006, she served as principal flute of the Yale Philharmonic
Orchestra at Carnegie Hall with the world-renowned pianist Peter
Frankl. In 2006 she was invited to play with one of the world’s
top conductors, Seiji Ozawa, in the Ongaku-juku project in Japan,
and from 2002 to 2005 she served as principal flute in the
Shanghai Youth Symphony Orchestra, one of the two highest level
professional youth orchestras in China.
As an accomplished chamber musician, Miss Wang has
achieved a great deal at a young age. On June 30th,
2008, she gave an acclaimed performance of Mozart’s Quartet in
C Major in the Honors Concert at CCSMF, for which more than 40
professional groups competed. On December 15th, 2005,
Miss Wang joined Griffin Winds to perform the U.S. premiere of
composer Trevor Gureckis’ The Machines of Loving Grace at
Morse Recital Hall in New Haven, CT. In addition, she was a member
of the contemporary chamber music orchestra of Shanghai
Conservatory of Music in 2004, touring Austria and Germany.
Miss Wang is also a gifted soloist. On May 21st,
2008, in a benefit concert at Yale University for the victims of
natural disasters in China, Myanmar, and the American South, Miss
Wang opened the concert with a moving solo performance of Chinese
composer Mizi Tan’s Flute and Drum Under the Setting Sun.
On April 21st, 2006, she was selected to perform for
President Hu Jintao of China during his visit to Yale. Other solo
performances include the 2007 Beaux Concerts de la Releve at the
Orford Music Festival in Canada, numerous recitals in Bartlett
Arboretum & Gardens between 2006-2008, her Master’s degree recital
at Yale University on April 9th, 2007, and many Chinese
events in Connecticut and New York City.
On
November 1st, Miss Wang played at Carnegie Hall with the Orchestra
of St. Luke's. She won the 2nd prize in the
8th INTERNATIONAL MUSIC COMPETITION
FOR YOUNG PERFORMERS “Città di Chieri”
